Organic Tulsi Chai Tea – A Wonderful Antidote To Everyday Stress & Strain

Started my day with a delicious cup of  organic Tulsi Chai -  it tastes and smells so good – and is a refreshing, healthy alternative to that coffee fix!

Tulsi Chai

I thought to mysef  “there must be tons of health benefits in Chai”, so I’ll have a quick scour around the internet and find out for myself.  I was amazed :

  • Chai is powerpacked with antioxidants.

  • Ayurvedic (Ancient Indian) philosophy and medicine consider it’s spices to be ‘sattvic’ or calming, vitalising and mentally clarifying – a wonderful antidote to everyday stresses and strains – we could all do with some of that!

  • Chai tea’s anti-inflammatory superstar is ginger. Ginger is often recommended in Ayurvedic medicine for inflammatory conditions like arthritis.

  • Strong digestion is vitally important to health.   So it was interesting to learn that (according to the Pacific College of Oriental medicine) the basic spices in Chai help stimulate, balance and support digestion.  Cinnamon helps to calm the stomach and combat nausea and diarrhea and is also thought to be an aphrodisiac!  Ginger also soothes the stomach.  Black pepper stimulates digestive fire as soon as it touches the taste buds.  Cloves stimulate digestion.  Cardamon is said to benefit the lungs, kidneys and heart and is a mood elevator.

Want To Try Some Tulsi Chai?

Ask at your local health shop if they stock Tulsi Tea.  If not try www.eastern-venture.com and they’ll point you in the right direction.

So do think about substituting Chai tea for some of your daily cups of coffee.  It’s an easy and enjoyable way to wean yourself off  having a stimulant, which is quickly followed by fatigue.   You can be enjoying Chai, that’s good for you and also be reaping all of those health benefits!

Warm wishes!

Yin & Yang Graze Box To The Rescue

It’s lunch time, but I’m in the middle of something so I don’t want to stop what I’m doing, I want to carry on – I’ll have my lunch a little later.  So a nice cup of redbush tea should do the trick.  But the biscuit tin is beckoning too!

Thank goodness my “Graze Box” arrived through the letter box this morning – a much healthier alternative.

But which punnet should I choose from the 4 punnets of nibbles they’ve sent me? :

  •   “Beach Bum” (mango, coconut, banana)
  •  ”Savoury Roasted Seeds” (roasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds with soya sauce)
  •  ”Sweet Goan Curry Crackers ( crunchy rice crackers with sweet curry spices)
  • “Yin & Yang” (belgian dark chocolate, almonds, jumbo raisins and cherries.

It’s just got to be “Yin & Yang” – that should do the trick and give me the energy to finish my task.

cherries, dark chocolate buttons, jumbo raisins, blanched almonds

Graze Boxes are a brilliant idea!  They’re a much healthier alternative than muffins, cakes or biscuits and there are a vast amount of little punnets to choose from.

You just tell Graze.com what your preferences are – what you like, love, want to try etc and it’s a chance to try healthy snacks you may never have considered before.

“Wow” – Success Coach Michael Neill – An End To Stress

Know what it’s like when you’ve been following the work of an expert in your field?

Someone you put on a pedestal and admire. You buy their books and enjoy their material – be it website, blog, e-newsletters etc.  Then there’s the excitement when you discover there’s an opportunity to meet them in person.  Well, that happened to me yesterday.  I was lucky enough to be there at Cheltenham Town Hall to hear Michaell Neill talk about his particular topic that evening “An End To Stress”.

Michael Neill is one of the world’s leading success coaches. He has been Paul McKenna’s personal coach for many years and teaches alongside Paul at large scale events in London. Michael lived in the UK for 14 years and is now based in his native US where he offers personal coaching sessions in Hollywood and throughout the West coast for movie stars and moguls, media people and business leaders. He appears regularly on TV and radio in the US and UK and his radio chat show ‘Bringing Your Genius to Life’ has over 30,000 listeners each week.

It’s a worry sometimes, as you never know, when you meet them in the flesh, whether all your illusions of that person are going to be shattered!

Not in the case of Michael Neill – what a charismatic, genuine, lovely person he turned out to be, along with being  a captivatingly funny speaker.

He gave his keen audience a new insight and new perspectives for dealing with stress. Here’s just a taster (my interpretation) of what he said :

  • We need to quieten our minds and let new thoughts in.
  • We can have less stress without the world having to change first.
  • “Thought is no more powerful than a tea bag without hot water!”
  • Our thoughts affect everything we do.
  • We often feel the problem is “out there” – so we keep wanting to change what’s on the outside of us eg: we want to look pretty, be famous, then we’ll be  happy. We might think “I need to change my job”, ” I need to change my relationship” etc.  But Michael expressed if you keep doing this to feel better – good luck – you’ll burn out!

  • “Germ theory” – stress is outside of us and we can catch it.  So there may be many “stress germs” in the office, but not so many “stress germs” in the park.
  • We’re hard-wired not to be scared by our own voice – we recognise it’s us.  We have the same hardwire when it comes to our mental health. Stress lowers thought recognition.  Worry is just a habit of thought.
  • When we’re stressed – it’s a warning light – you’re thinking yourself unwell.
  • Wait – and pause – and you’ll go back to your state of clarity.
  • Michael shared an example of a time when he asked a stressed lady “How do you make a bowl of murky water clear?” Answer – just let it settle.  Do the same with your mind – the nature of your mind is clear.  Just give it a little bit of time – a moment – and it will go right back to clear.  Live more of your life from that place.  You won’t have any anger management issues – it will pass.

He crammed so many more valuable insights into the evening – too many to mention here – you’ll just have to try and catch him between his travels to the UK and the USA.

I’ve already read Michael’s books from cover to cover.  Being there at the talk last night has given me a “gentle nudge” to pull those books off the shelves again and go back and play with the ideas in each chapter.  Then bring these ideas together and share them with my family, friends and Clients.

If you want to learn more about Michael Neill – I highly recommend his books :  A few years ago a generous Client of mine studied NLP with Michael in London and treated me to a personally signed copy of  “You Can Have What You Want”  then  I treated myself to “Feel Happy Now” and “Super Coach”.  If you prefer to listen to CD’s – “Effortless Success” a 6 CD set is excellent value and will help you to create a life that makes you go “Wow”!

Diet Soft Drinks May Increase Waist Size Dramatically

Just be careful if you decide to choose – artificially sweetened – diet soft drinks to get your fix.

2 new studies (presented June 25th and 27th 2011 at the American Diabetes Association’s Scientific Sessions in San Diego) are suggesting that diet drinks “may be free of calories but not consequences”!

Diet soft drinks or sodas may be failing to help people lose weight and may even be contributing to weight gain by raising blood sugar and leading people towards type 2 diabetes.

Human Study: The San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Ageing

To examine the relationship between drinking diet soft drinks and long-term change in waist circumference the Health Science Center team assessed the data from 474 participants.  Measurements were made of height, weight, waist circumference and diet soft drink intake and participants were followed for an average of 9.5 years.

Amazingly, results showed that diet soft drink users, as a group, experienced 70% greater increases in waist circumference compared with non-users.  Also it was interesting to note that the people who drank the most (more than 2 diet drinks a day) frighteningly, experienced waist circumference increases that were 500% greater than non-users!

It’s well known that abdominal fat may be a major risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other chronic conditions. So, although many people are making a conscious effort to avoid sugar-sweetened drinks, they should maybe also think twice before they choose a “diet” version.

Study Of Mice – Consumption of Aspartame

In a related project, mice ate food to which aspartame (which is an artifical sweetener widely used in diet soft drinks and other products)  and corn oil were added.  The other group ate food with corn oil but no aspartame.  After 3 months on this high fat diet it appeared that the mice fed the aspartame diet showed elevated fasting glucose levels and lower insulin levels than the other group – which indicates that the sweetener may contribute to the development of insulin resistance – that may lead to gaining weight and possibly type 2 diabetes.

Further to these studies – as I’m a big fan of Dr Mercola -  I “dipped into” his website to see what his thoughts are about aspartame and was intrigued to learn about Victoria Innes-Browns findings with her study of Rats  (Victoria is author of :   “Are Your Diet Sodas Killing You” and  “My Aspartame Experiment” )

Rat with Aspartame Developed Tumour

Dr Mercola says:

“Victoria Innes-Brown has done us all a great favor by publishing the findings of her private experiments. Over a two and a half-year period, she performed a set of meticulous and detailed animal experiments, documenting the horrific effects of using aspartame liquid comparable to diet soda.

I believe her work adds to the bulk of data already available, confirming and reinforcing the true health dangers of this popular artificial sweetener.”

Here’s the full link to Dr Mercola’s site with the full article :

Self-Funded Study Found HUGE Tumors From This Everyday Food!

So do you think you may be addicted to aspartame?  If so, please think seriously about taking steps to get off it.

You may avoid unnecessary pain and suffering and your overall health will thank you for it!

Pure Pampering At Prestige Beauty, Hagley Road West, Birmingham!

Prestige Beauty Birmingham

The perfect antidote to that stressful Monday morning feeling – one and a half hours of pure pampering at Prestige Beauty, Hagley Road West, Birmingham (with special thanks to my mum-in-law, Maureen, for such a thoughtful birthday treat)!

The treatment began with an amazing back massage.  Claire, my therapist, dug in and smoothed away all those knots of tension I didn’t realise I had.

Then on to my “Dermalogica Luxury Prescriptive Deep Cleansing Facial” using plant extracts, hydro essential botanicals, alpha hydroxy fruit acids and botanical enzymes – I know that all sounds very technical – but let me tell you it was pure bliss!

Claire put me “under the spotlight” and closely examined the condition of my skin.  Scary!!  However, I was on cloud nine when she commented that my skin is in great condition for my age and could be attributed to someone quite a few years younger – all that investment in quality supplements and an excellent skincare regime must be paying off!

During my treatment Claire and I were chatting about how it seems lots of  women wait until they hit crisis-point with their health and wellbeing before they step back and take some much-needed time out for themselves – rather than having regular “maintenance” treatments to keep their “health and wellbeing account” topped up to help them get out there and cope with what life throws at them.

So my message for you is – When can you take some time out of your busy diary for some much-needed pampering?  If you’re not in a position to treat yourself – why not ask for gift vouchers for your birthday or other special occasions.  You’ll be glad you did.

If you’re local to Birmingham – you can reach Claire at: www.prestigebeautyltd.com or if you’re further afield “Google” your own local beautician.

Relax and enjoy!

Get Off Your Butt – Just How Dangerous Is Sitting All Day?

Busy successful business woman sitting at desk multitasking

Sitting down, which most of us do for at least eight hours each day, might be the worst thing we do for our health all day!

A recent medical journal study showed that people who sit for most of their day are 54% more likely to die of a heart attack.

The idea of  a “stand up” desk is beginning to sound more appealing by the minute!

Take a look at this story by Mashable with fab’ accompanying graphics – apparently obese people sit 2.5 more hours per day than thin people.  Also the section about “How Sitting Wrecks Your Body” was really enlightening – As soon as you sit, electrical activity in the leg muscles shuts off; calorie burning drops to 1 per minute; enzymes that help to break down fat drop 90%; after 2 hours good cholesterol drops 20%; after 24 hours insulin effectiveness drops 24% and risk of diabetes rises.

Time now to get up off my butt and go and make myself a nice cup of green tea.

Stay on the move!

Lose Inches Up To 4 Times Faster With Vacu Slim!

Wow – what a morning!

Ventured over to “Vacu Slim Studios” in Erdington, Birmingham to try out their “Body Space” treadmill & elliptical stepper that :

~ target stubborn inches around your tummy, thighs and buttocks.
~ help you to lose fat faster.
~ attack cellulite.
~ improve metabolism.
~ increase blood circulation in problematic areas.
~ Tone and smooth the skin.

What more could a girl want!!

Gosia, the owner of the Studio, firstly asked me to complete her health questionnaire to check out if I’m taking medication of any kind, then she zipped me up into the special vacuum sealed capsule enclosing the lower part of my body, from the waist down, in the “body space” treadmill.

I decided to take it easy and just walk briskly for 20 minutes for my first go at it. I could feel the suction of the vacuum and the wonderful heat from the infrared lights. I was keen to try more, so moved on to the elliptical stepper for a further 10 mins and with the 2 workouts under my belt I felt great.

I took Gosia’s advice to drink plenty of water on the way home, as the infrared aspect of the therapy has a “detox” effect.

I certainly plan to visit again as Gosia is offering 20 sessions for £99 for a limited time, which almost seems too good to be true and very good value (especially when you compare it to the price of gym membership and other similar systems). I’m going to get my sessions in before other people catch on and the studio gets too busy!

If you’re looking to lose a few pounds and inches quickly, then here’s the link if you want to look the studio up : http://www.qype.co.uk/place/1777947-Vacu-Slim-Studios-Birmingham .

All the best.

The Foul Bowel – 101 Ways To Survive & Thrive With Crohn’s Disease

I’m delighted to invite Guest, John Bradley, to my Blog today. John has written a terrific new book “The Foul Bowel – 101 Ways To Survive And Thrive With Crohn’s Disease” .

But this is no medical misery book. Spiritually uplifting and, at times, downright hilarious, “The Foul Bowel” shows how “Crohnies” can take ownership for their illness and it’s treatment. The outcome is not just the feeling of triumphing over the medics – although that has its moments – but is a celebration of life as a “Crohnie” :

“Enjoy a better life with a chronic illness.

While we all strive to be healthy, for some of us, alas, it is no longer an option. A chronic illness such as Crohn’s Disease is, unfortunately, a condition for life. No-one knows the cause and there are huge variations in the course the illness takes. Repeated surgeries are the norm while daily life can be impacted by pain, malnourishment, lethargy and incontinence. It affects approximately 60,000 people in the UK, a number that has been rising by an extra 6,000 each year, and is a disease that strikes mostly between the ages of 12 and 24. People with Crohn’s can expect to live with it for over fifty years.

But while one’s health might not be ideal that does not mean that life cannot be enjoyed to the full. In my book, “The Foul Bowel: 101 Ways to Survive and Thrive with Crohn’s Disease”, I try to provide a perspective in my opening and closing messages that life as a “Crohnie” is what you make of it:

Tip #1:  Take Your Pick

You have a choice how to be ill. You can attempt to carry on as though nothing is wrong and end up killing yourself in the process. Or you can be a victim, weeping and wailing “Why me?” at every turn and killing yourself spiritually in the process. Or you can be a Positive Acceptor: recognising that your Crohn’s is a card you have been dealt in the poker game of life, but one that will not take away your ability to play your hand to the full.

Tip #101: Don’t Look Back

Being ill is indeed a drawback if you spend all your time and energy looking back, thinking what life would have been like without illness. But when life with illness is spent looking forward, thinking about and preparing for the possibilities that life holds within the limits that your illness imposes, it is no drawback at all, it is just part of your life.

Over a seven-year period I had to see a lot of doctors and have my orifices endlessly probed before I was finally diagnosed at the age of 23 with Crohn’s Disease. Since then, I have spent almost thirty years dealing every day with life-changing implications of illness, drugs, medics and the not-so-occasional surgery. But, by learning to see the funny side of the ridiculous medical procedures we undergo; by being reminded each and every day of the value of good supportive relationships with family, friends and colleagues; by realising that Crohn’s Disease need not restrict the freedom we have to find our own path through life; by seeing that there are still opportunities to make good choices, Crohn’s patients can have as happy and fulfilled a life as anyone else. This is true despite having an endless cycle of symptoms, surgeries and drug regimes that healthy people would find appalling to contemplate.

Please – if there’s anyone in your family, or if you have friends or colleagues that have been diagnosed with Chrohn’s Disease – then please do tell them about John’s book and his website: www.foulbowel.com

Warm wishes.

Revitalise Your Spirit At “You Spa” At Radisson Blu Hotel Birmingham

“Do you not take wonderful, extraordinary care of yourself because you’re no Gandhi, Mother Theresa or Dalai Lama – or are you not a Gandhi, Mother Theresa or Dalai Lama because you don’t prioritise taking extraordinary care of yourself?”

Whenever I need a few words of wisdom to lift my soul, I can always rely on Michael Neill “The Success Coach” to inspire me (above quote is from his book “You Can Have What You Want”).

Those words were poignant as on Monday I took some time out to “nurture my spirit”. Did you know the word “spirit” comes from the Latin word for breath, so your spirit is quite literally your life force – that part of you that makes you feel alive.

Yes, I felt guilty about taking time for myself when “there is work to be done” – but what a difference just taking a few hours out can make.

The “You Spa” at the tranquil and luxurious Radisson Blu Hotel in Birmingham was the perfect place to unwind. A blissful body exfoliation using Himalayan Salt, removed with hot towels, followed by a wonderfully uplifting facial massage.

I promote personal care products without harmful ingredients myself within my “Enjoy A Great Life” business, however, I have to say I was very impressed with the natural products used at the spa with their gorgeous blend of plant extracts and essential oils, which are specially chosen to work on specific chakras. “Rosy Glow Soothing Facial Mask” to work on the “heart chakra” was one I particularly loved and was just perfect for me.

So why not bring Your body and mind into focus and harmony again by taking some time out to recharge your batteries and revitalise your spirit? Go on, get your diary out and make some time – You’ll be glad you did!

Warm wishes.
Annie
