Why You Should Plog
Well plogging is an eco-friendly trend, said to have started in Sweden – combining jogging and picking up litter.
It combines cardio from running, with squats from bending over to pick up the rubbish.
It tends to take place in parks or other urban environments.
People have been known to show off the “booty” they’ve collected on Instagram!
Plogging Is Easy & Affordable
And it helps the environment too!
One fan of Plogging is Marine Biologist, Melanie Knight. She heard about it through Facebook, as several of her friends linked her to an article about it.
As a Marine Biologist the environment is an important issue for Melanie – and as a long-time runner it seemed to be a perfect combination of things to do together.
She thought to herself “This is so easy, why not do this right now.”
So when she went for her run she’d take her rubbish bag with her, set her timer on her ‘phone and do a “10 minute tidy” picking up the litter on the way.
After the 10 minutes is up she pops the rubbish in the nearest rubbish bin and gets on with her run.
Melanie feels strongly that rubbish getting into the oceans is one of the biggest issues on the planet right now.
It’s gaining lots of attention because of the impact it’s having on sea birds and on fish – and even on the food we consume.
See a video of Melanie sharing her experience of Plogging.
It’s well worth a watch. Click on the video below :
Melanie goes on to say “All of the animals in the ocean are curious, they explore with their mouth and they put things in their mouth and stuff ends up being ingested.
On her regular run, Melanie has found a full jug of milk, a kimono costume, as well as a cow costume! But she’s mainly finds cigarette butts, coffee cups & lids.
Runners around the world seem to be taking up Plogging.
To join the wave, all you need is a pair of trainers and an environmentally friendly bin liner.
So what are you waiting for?
It can be fun and a way to make a difference a difference and positive change!
Join The Plog-olution!
I’m adding this section on to my original “plogging” blog post above.
Since my last post I was delighted to discover a London based “plogging” site called Plog-olution.
Here’s a little bit about their story :
“Once upon a time, not so long ago ….
Two friends sat down and moaned about the state of the world and the barrage of plastic and rubbish blighting our rivers and oceans.
But what could two people do?
Well they discovered ‘plogging’ and suggested that maybe some others could pop along and join them.
Two of them turned into 16 and the first plog was born.
Click on their short fun video below :
Starting at Putney Bridge and running towards Hammersmith and back, 16 people picked up over 30 bags of rubbish.
Dermot decided that it wasn’t enough to do one simple plog.
Oh no, this was going to be a regular occurance.
Big ideas and passion lead to change so they arranged the next plog in Kingston-upon-Thames.
This time they kitted themselves out in custom made t-shirts.
With shouts of ‘bravo’ from onlookers and children joining in the fun, they collected over 35 bags of rubbish.
Plog-olution has now held large scale plogs across London and much further afield.
They’ve seen the difference plogging can make to a community. Not only does it bring different people together in a common cause, it tidies up the area, ridding it of the scourge of single use plastic.
