Time To Dig Out Your Feather Duster & Rubber Gloves?
Feeling the urge to fling open the windows and doors and have a good old fashioned giant house clean?
Spring has sprung and we’re on the way to some beautiful summer days (we hope!)
Is it now time to confront that pesky dust and dirt on high and low surfaces and in all the nooks and crannies of your rooms?
Nothing feels quite as satisfying as languishing in a house that’s sparkling clean – even the energy in the house feels so much better.
But Wait! ….
Have you given any thought as to whether you have the right equipment for the job?
What about cleaning products? Have you checked under your sink lately?
Often you’ll find old sticky bottles, powder that’s leaked out of boxes. Stuff that may have been there for months on end. Not to mention the pipe that’s leaked water out over everything – and there may even be some damp and mould!
What products have you already got – And dare you check the ingredients list on the packaging?
Did You Know That Some Of Your Cleaning Products May Be Toxic?
Also they might carry warnings!
Many common household cleaning products used daily can be harmful to you and your family.
And did you know, indoor air carries a higher risk for personal exposure to toxic chemicals than outdoor air?
Unbelievably, lots of household cleaners and even air fresheners are classed as hazardous waste.
Almost all commercially available floor and furniture waxes contain neurotoxic petroleum-based solvents.
It’s pretty scary really when you look closely ….
I experienced this first hand.
I was cleaning my solid wood desk in my office. The tin had an image of a bumble bee and said “the natural wax”.
It wasn’t until I looked more closely at the back of the tin where it said “highly flammable” and “harmful – contains Toluene”.
Of course, I couldn’t resist “Googling” Toluene to find the low down on exactly what that chemical is and how harmful it is.
Well, I was astounded!
Toluene:
- can cause damage to the skin and eyes.
- It produces dangerous fumes which can cause nausea, headaches, unconsciousness and even death, if inhaled.
- It’s irritating to the respiratory tract.
- Can cause drowsiness and dizziness.
- May cause mild neurotoxicity
The list went on, but that’s enough to be going on with!
That must be one product I bought that “slipped through the net”, as I’m usually a stickler for making a point of buying eco-friendly non-toxic cleaning products.
