The Wim Hof Method combines three powerful tools:

  • Breathing
  • Cold Exposure
  • Commitment

to unleash your body’s untapped potential.

What Makes The Wim Hof Method So Powerful?

It all comes down to 3 core pillars:

Breathing

We all breathe, but most of us never tap into it’s full power.

Wim’s specialised breathing technique floods your body with oxygen, unlocking a cascade of benefits:

  • More Energy, faster recovery
  • Lower stress and anxiety
  • Stronger immune response
  • Clearer thinking and emotional balance

It’s simple, powerful and easy to learn …

WHM Protocol: Basic Breathing Exercise

  • Before engaging – be mindful.
  • Listen to your body and learn from the signals your body & mind send you.
  • Use those signals as personal feedback, adjust as needed.

Step 1

  • Sit in a meditation posture or lie down – whichever’s most comfortable.
  • Be in a quiet, safe environment.
  • Make sure you can expand your lungs freely, without constriction.

Step 2

  • Close your eyes.
  • Try to clear your mind.
  • Be conscious about your breath and try to fully connect with it.
  • Take 30 – 40 deep breaths – in through the nose or mouth.
  • Fill up your belly, your chest, all the way up to your head.
  • Don’t force the exhale – just relax and let the air out.
  • Fully in – letting go ….

Step 3

  • At the end of the last breath, draw the breath in once more and fill the lungs to maximum capacity without using any force.
  • Then relax to let the air out.
  • Hold the breath until you feel the urge to breathe again (called the retention phase)

Step 4

  • When you feel the urge to breathe, take one deep breath in and hold it for 10 – 15 seconds (called the recovery breath).

Step 5

  • Let your breath go and start with a new round.
  • Fully in.
  • Letting go.
  • Repeat the full cycle 3 to 4 times.

Once you’ve completed this breathing exercise, take your time to enjoy the feeling.

With repeated practice, this protocol becomes more and more like a meditation.

Go further ….

Once you’ve had some experience of the basic breathing exercise, you can try this additional technique in round 2, step 4:

  • try “squeezing”  the breath to your head when you take your recovery breath.
  • You do this by tensing your pelvic floor and directing that sense of tension to the core of your body and up to your head, while keeping the rest of your body relaxed.
  • You should feel a sense of pressure in your head.
  • Then relax everything when you exhale.

Curious to hear Wim explain the power of his breathing technique in his own words?

Don’t miss the inspiring conversation he had with Jay Shetty.

Cold therapy

Yes, cold is your friend.

Exposing your body to cold, gradually and safely, triggers incredible adaptations:

  • Increased brown fat and metabolism (hello fat burning!)

  • Lower inflammation and pain

  • Enhanced immunity

  • Better sleep and balanced hormones

  • A flood of feel-good endorphins that lift your mood

Start with cold showers—no icy lakes required (yet!).

Curious as to how it actually works – and how to ease into it without shocking your system?

Keep reading, because, further below, I’ll walk you through Wim’s “why and the how” ….

Commitment

The third pillar of the method is “mindset”.

Wim calls this pillar – Commitment – it’s what ties it all together.

He says you must have the right “mindset” to make the commitment to go against your ego:

  • just breathe!
  • take the damn shower!
  • just do it!

You could also call this pillar “the power of the mind”.

It includes the idea of:

  • the will and the power to imagine
  • to meditate
  • to visualise
  • the power to send your attention to any part of your body, to observe any bodily process.

We Can Look To The Ancient Yogis And Shamans For The Secrets Of Mind Power

But it’s simpler than all of that – it’s proven by science.

Scientific studies and personal experience give us the confidence we need to do “Wim’s Method”.

The Wayne State University findings were not only spectacular, they marked a real breakthrough in our scientific understanding of how we can control our minds to consciously alter our biochemistry.(Source: https://www.wimhofmethod.com/blog/study-brain-over-body)

WHM Protocol: Basic Mindset Exercise

Your greatest accomplishment is stillness of mind.

When the mind is still, you go from external to internal programming.

In the absence of thoughts – stillness brings your feelings into alignment with your innermost being.

Find a comfortable place to sit down, then begin to follow the breath ….

  • deeply in, letting go
  • deeply in, letting go
  • deeply in, letting go
  • peacefully following the breath
  • deeply in, letting go
  • deeply in, letting go

Notice a sense of calm settling over you and it is in this moment you can set your mind.

  • begin to scan your body while visualising what it is you are going to do
  • perhaps you want to stay longer in the shower or be able to do more pushups
  • maybe you want to hold a challenging yoga pose or take a longer bike ride than ever before
  • Scan your body – set your intention
  • Take your time with it – tell your body what you expect it to do
  • Scan yourself for how you feel
  • If you detect any misalignment of your intention – remain calm, keep breathing
  • wait for the moment in which there’s a sense of trust, centred energy, alignment
  • Give power to that feeling with your breath
  • Then go and do what you intend to do
  • Success

You’ll begin to feel stronger, more alive and more in control than ever before!

Wim’s Record- Breaking Feats (Yes, They’re Real!)

Wim Hof has not only helped advance scientific understanding, but also accomplished extraordinary feats of human endurance.

Across his decades of dancing with the cold, the Iceman set 26 world records, and broke a Guinness World Record 18 times. Some of his most memorable achievements include:

  • Running a half marathon above the Arctic Circle, barefoot wearing only shorts
  • Swimming underneath ice for 66 meters
  • Hanging on one finger at an altitude of 2,000 meters

the artic circle norway

  • Climbing the highest mountains in the world while wearing only shorts
  • Running a full marathon in the Namib Desert without drinking
  • Standing in a container while covered in ice cubes for extended periods of time

Wim’s not a superhero.

He’s a human who unlocked his potential – and wants to help you do the same.

“I didn’t invent these techniques” Wim says.

“I just rediscovered the power we’ve forgotten we have.”

Real Results From Real People

Thousands around the world have used Wim’s method to manage or relieve:

  • Autoimmune conditions like Lupus, MS, and Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Chronic fatigue, depression, and anxiety

  • Diabetes, inflammation, and even Parkinson’s symptoms

These are individuals who took back control—and so can you.

Why I’m A Wim Hof Fan

I kept seeing Wim pop up in podcasts and health circles, so I finally dug deeper.

One YouTube rabbit hole and a book later, I was hooked.

His method is simple. His results are stunning.

And best of all – you can start practicing at home without equipment, pills, or special diets.

wim hof the iceman

I joined a couple of Wim Hof Facebook Groups, where everyday people are sharing their cold shower and ice bath experiences, plus their daily dips in ice cold sea water etc and how his method has been life changing for them.

Both their stories and the scenery in the photo’s they share is awe inspiring.

But venturing straight into an ice bath wasn’t for me.

I wasn’t brave enough to take the plunge!

Ice Cold Water Can Be Quite Shocking!

I decided to take baby steps and try the Wim Hof Method Protocol “Cold Exposure For Beginners”.

Ice cold water can be quite shocking!

So to reduce the impact of the shock and instead allow the ice water to optimise my cardiovascular system, I began with ending my warm shower with just 15 seconds of cold water.

woman having freezing cold shower

The warm water opens up your veins, aiding blood flow. Then you take a quick blast of cold water.

When you shift the temperature from warm to cold, all the little muscles in your vascular system begin to awaken. They close up then open, close up and open and this repetitive process establishes the vascular muscle tone that, with repeated exposure, develops into its optimal condition.

Admittedly, I started tentatively by exposing just one leg to the cold water, then another, then my arms, my torso and then my head

Once I was used to that, I extended it to 30 seconds, then more.

It’s just so exhilarating – I highly recommend you to give it a try!

girl jumping for joy exhilerated

Over time, the tone of your vascular muscles improve and develop and your core body temperature remains just fine.

Your body experiences better blood flow throughout the day, which gives you a lot more energy.

Eventually, when you’re able to go longer than 30 seconds, you seem to develop the ability to consciously resist the shock of the cold water.

You suppress the shiver response, the gasp.

Suddenly the water’s not so cold anymore.

You feel in control and you’re awakening to the physiological power and the neural activity of your own body. It feels awesome!

As They Say “A Cold Shower A Day Keeps The Doctor Away”

Here’s how you can take your first tentative steps towards transforming your health, strength and happiness with Wim Hof’s “WHM Protocol – Cold Exposure For Beginners” :

Exposing yourself to ice water can be quite shocking, so you need to learn to prepare your body if you want to try it (see warning message earlier in the blog).

What Can You Do To Reduce The Impact Of The Shock?

And instead allow the ice water to optimise your cardiovascular system?

Most of us tend to take warm or hot showers, because we don’t like the cold.

But if you end your shower with 15 seconds of cold water at the end of your shower every day and work up to 30 seconds and increase the time as follows :

Week 1            –           15 – 30 seconds of cold water at the end of your warm shower.

Week 2            –            1 minute of cold water at the end of a warm shower.

Week 3            –            A minute and a half of cold water at the end of a warm shower.

Week 4           –            2 minutes of cold water at the end of a warm shower.

Wim Says Follow The Feeling

Don’t force anything – build up slowly.

Do this gradually and work your way up, at least 5 days a week.

As your vascular muscle tone develops, it will absorb more and more of the shock until it’s hardly a shock at all.

Your vascular system constricts on demand to protect your vital parts.

What you will notice is your heart rate goes down during the day, reducing your stress level.

And you’ll start to feel more energised.

heart rate graph and stethescope

The improved blood flow delivers better nutrition to your cells.

You won’t get sick so often, as your body is no longer vulnerable.

Instead you’ll feel strong!

By The End Of Your Fourth Week

Your vascular tone will be optimised to the point that it will be “mind over matter”.

You turn the knob to cold and “will” your body not to react in shock.

This is only the beginning of the power of the mind opening up to you.

If you’re able to command the vascular system, which is everywhere within your body, you are able to go, at will, to any part and control it consciously.

You’re the boss – and it all started with 15 – 30 seconds of cold water!

Important Note

Before trying cold exposure, please consult your doctor, especially if you have any health conditions.

Start gradually and safely.

Cold therapy is powerful – but not for everyone.

Feeling Motivated By What You’ve Learned So Far?

“Freeze The Fear With Wim Hof”

This TV series premiered on Tuesday 12th April 2022 on BBC One, with new episodes airing weekly.

Sadly, the full series is no longer available to view on BBC iplayer, but do enjoy this short trailer that will give you a taster for what it was all about:

This Morning” presenter Holly Willoughby, a self-confessed “Wim Hof superfan”, presented the six-part series opposite comedian Lee Mack.

Wim Hof shared his method with 8 daring celebrities who were lined up for this extreme reality series.

They gave up their warm, cosy lives to spend some time in the Italian mountains, taking epic adventures in sub-zero conditions (with a dedicated welfare team on location for the celebrities).

Who Were Those Brave Celebrities?

 Alfie Boe (Musical Theatre)

Chelcee Grimes (Singer-Songwriter)

Dianne Buswell (Strictly Come Dancing professional)

Gabby Logan (BBC Sports Presenter)

Owain Wyn Evans (Weatherman)

Patrice Evra (Former Footballer)

Professor Green (Rapper & Mental Heath Activist)

Tamzin Outhwaite (EastEnders)

People have been fascinated by how Wim trained his mind and body to tolerate such incredible strain.

These 8 celebrities bravely prepared to put themselves under similar pressure, under Wim’s guidance.

The fun of the series each week was:

  • watching the celebrities complete their daunting challenges
  • notice how the challenges became progressively more daring
  • see how they bravely faced their fears
  • sympathising with them as they pushed their minds to the limits!

a cat with fear on its face facing its fear

And the programme smashed it’s goals to:

  • demonstrate the full benefits of cold-water therapy
  • show just how vast the potential of the human mind is
  • help the celebrities achieve extraordinary results
  • provide motivation to us all at the same time!

What Kinds Of Challenges Did The Celebrities Face?

There were no 5 star hotels or fancy apartments for the eight celebrities to stay in.

Their accommodation was a tented village on the snowy slopes of the Italian Alps.

Their very first challenge saw them having to plunge themselves into an icy lake through a hole cut out from the ice.  Brrr!

woman in icy water

Challenge two entailed abseiling, facing forwards, down a mountain slope!

Holly Willougby said “no way would I want to do that”.

But, as she watched the transformations in all the celebrities, the moment their mindset flipped and they started to enjoy it, she thought “I want to be doing what they’re doing!”

Lee Mack said “Wim is already a massive star on the internet, he doesn’t need TV. It was incredible to see what the celebrities achieved.”
